Sumptuous and stunning renovation of a beautiful art deco building. This beautifully restored art deco cinema makes a special occasion of watching a movie. I'd say it's primarily aimed at adults, with comfortable sofas for two and at seat service. Love it!
First of all, it is expensive. Got to say though, it certainly is a great cinematic experience. Excellent screens and sound quality. Comfy sofa and armchair seating with plenty of room. Excellent staff who deliver good food to your seat. Excellent booking system and you can even have a beer during the film. Thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience.

City Screen is always a great place to meet and to see films. Earlier review was an error. I have been going since it opened and love the kind of films it puts on including the Saturday morning specific genre films. Fabulous place
My favourite cinema in York! Right in the city centre, lively cafe with terrace next to the river, nice simple food and coffee/tea, and free art exhibitions with pieces for sale. Good-sized screens, very clean. Nice toilets as well. And for those interested, music and other cultural events in the bar downstairs.

Great place. Popped in for a light snack and a few drinks. Staff are brilliant, especially the lad behind the bar. Great food and good variety of beers on draft. Will be going back!!!
From the outside you would think this was just another bar, however it has a small cinema room which is available for hire as well as a function room with its own bar and also accommodation. I have been to a function here twice and the food which was served was great, the prices of the drinks are about the same as everywhere else and are reasonably priced. The bar is tucked away but a good find if you want to visit a more independent place to eat and drink.

We went to see The Last Ship which we thoroughly enjoyed along with the rest of the audience who at the conclusion gave the cast a standing ovation. The only downside was either the lack of air conditioning or the temperature was not set low enough. We were sitting in the Dress Circle so people must have been melting higher up. One of the cast remarked during the show that we were sitting in a velvet lined oven!
A great theatre in the centre of York with good bus connections. The theatre is a short walk from the train station (or two bus stops on numerous lines) and is quite close to the minster. Housed in a lovely historic building with a beautiful modern extension the theatre hosts a large variety of plays and workshops throughout the year. There is also a bar/cafe at the theatre that is not too expensive and has a nice range of food and drink.

Quaint, so friendly perfect for school performance. Don't expect luxury for this price.
Quirky informal and fun. We were made very welcome on arrival and thoroughly enjoyed the performance. Will definitely visit again.

The Grand Opera House is a fabulous old building which makes coming to the theatre feel like a genuinely special occasion. The staff are friendly, helpful and smart and service at the bar is efficient. Well located in the city centre and close to the river, there are plenty of places nearby to enjoy a drink or a bite to eat before the show. They get some good acts on.
Lovely in the stalls but hotter than hot on the upper balcony... and that was in winter. But all in all a good little venue. Be prepared to queue on the street whilst waiting for doors to open for the performance.
